Before treatment

An intake interview takes place, before the start of treatment. During the intake, a questionnaire will be filled in, and a physical examination will take place. In some cases, an oxygen measurement takes place through the skin, a so-called transcutaneous oxygen measurement.
At the first visit, please bring your medication, health card, identification papers and possible referral.

Equalizing of the ears

You will practice with the equalizing of the ears. When the treatment chamber is brought under pressure, it is possible to experience pressure on your ears. This is similar to the pressure felt during take-off and landing of an aircraft, driving in the mountains, or driving through a long tunnel. Within the hyperbaric treatment chamber, this feeling occurs due to the fact that the pressure is higher at the outside of the eardrum, than on the inside. This sensation of pressure can be relieved by chewing, swallowing, yawning or equalizing the ears. Equalizing means that you pinch your nose and try to squeeze, whilst keeping your mouth closed. Please do not wait until you experience pain in your ears, but start as soon as you feel a light pressure, or experience decreased hearing functionality. The assistant within the hyperbaric treatment chamber will assist you.

Special clothing

Before treatment commences, you will change into cotton clothing, which is provided by us (cotton pants and vest). You do not need to change underwear. Your personal belongings can be placed in a locker during treatment, you are allowed to keep the key with you during treatment. No objects may be placed in the pockets of the cotton clothing and taken inside the treatment chamber. Any wounds will stay bandaged during treatment.
During treatment, you are allowed to read, puzzle, or listen to music through headphones.

Safety Rules

For your safety, we have established rules, which you must follow. The administration of oxygen, necessitates strict compliance with the following rules, from both you and our staff. It is prohibited to bring the following items into the hyperbaric treatment chamber:

  • matches
  • lighters
  • fountain pens
  • spray cans
  • make-up
  • hairspray
  • creams
  • appliances
  • watches (diving watches are allowed)

When you are not sure if a specific item is allowed, please ask the staff. It is important that the hyperbaric treatment chamber is kept clean, it is therefore not allowed to keep your shoes on. We will supply socks, or you can keep your own socks on.

Treatment hours

Treatment takes place Monday through Friday, you do not have to come during the weekend. You will, normally, receive treatment once a day. There are typically two treatment sessions per day. Morning sessions start at 10.00 am, afternoon sessions start at 1.00 pm. You must be present at least 30 minutes before the start of the session.

Location

You can find the Medical Centre Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, on the basement level of the hospital. After entering through the main entrance of the hospital, follow route 03 towards the Medical Centre Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. Walk straight ahead until you face the X-ray department. There, take the elevator to the basement floor (-1). After exiting the elevator, turn right and pass through the sliding doors.
After the sliding doors, you enter the corridor that leads to the Medical Center Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. Please notify your presence at the front desk, and take a seat in the waiting area.
